One Of Those Good News And Bad News Things

A Girl, a Boy, and a Monster Cat made MotherReader's Best Books of 2007 (So Far) MEGALIST. That's the good news.

The bad news is that even though I've read nearly 80 books so far this year, I've read only three from the 2007 MEGALIST. (I got a fourth one from the library this morning.) This business about 150,000+ books being published every year is just too much for me. I can't keep up.

People need to stop writing so many books. Let's put a stop to this...oh, wait..

I laughed when I read that because I have heard that argument before--at a site for writers. No one, however, volunteered to take a bullet for the group and give up writing and publishing.

Actually, the argument seemed to be a supply and demand type of thing--these are hard times for writers because there are more books being published than the reading market can absorb and this is why so few writers can make a living. Just as the income for various professions goes up when there are fewer people within a profession, income for writers would go up if there were fewer of us.

But who will those few writers be?
