Hitchhiker Interview

The first issue of Darker Matter, an on-line science fiction magazine, includes an unpublished 1979 interview with Douglas Adams. I mention this because Adams was wildly popular with a couple of teenagers around here a few years ago. In fact, one of them turns up his nose at Hitchhiker-like fiction because he sees such authors as Adams-wannabes. He accepts no imitations.

  1. My middle daughter is such a fan of Douglas Adams that she checked out 'Hitchhiker' on tape from the library and sat with me over the summer to make sure I listened to it.

I had heard bits over the years on the radio but had not had the full experience. She felt my education was sadly lacking and, as a daughter, was duty bound to add to my knowledge.

I was recently given an autographed copy of an Adams book which arrived while she was home for spring break. No one in the family appreciated it more than she.

  2. I believe I've read most of the trilogy, but it never made that big an impression on me. I believe this may be because I brought the first one with me to the hospital (many years ago) to read while I was recovering from surgery. You just can't overcome something like that.

I think I liked one of Adams' other books about a detective better.

  3. Thanks for this. I have a teen that has decided that Douglas Adams is the funniest guy in the world and he's insisting that I take the time to sit down and read it myself. (SO many books...) I'll pass this on to him.
