I learned on Facebook today that the co-author of the novel Mrs. Mike has died. The obit describes the book as a "cherished mainstay of adolescence and beyond."
I read it as a pretty young adolescent. My recollection is that I thought the whole thing was true. Clearly, I did not look at author names back then.
Gail - I'm late to the party as I just got my computer back from the shop - I also read Mrs. Mike, twice, as a I recall, intensely and of course completely convinced that it was a memoir. . . . not sure if knowing that it wasn't changes my experience, 30+ years later? Or how it intersects with the "historical fiction better be historically accurate" rubric that rules my current work (both reading and writing) but somehow, I think this connects. . .
ReplyDeleteThanks as always
I would have to read it again to get a few for accuracy or even to try to guess what it was that made me think it was a true story. I can't see myself doing that. I've had too many experiences with the adult Gail being unhappy with books the very young Gail enjoyed. It's probably better not to mess with memory.
ReplyDeleteI, of course, meant "to get a feeling for accuracy."
