The Complications Book

Behemoth is the second in the Leviathan series by Scott Westerfeld. Though I liked the first book, Leviathan, I found it somewhat "mechanical," seeming "to be manufactured of parts that would be recognizable to someone who had done much reading." The second book seems like...hmmm...not exactly manufactured filler, but manufactured complications. The complications book in a series. It also seemed odd to me that the book is called Behemoth when the behemoth is quite a minor part of the book. I don't think it's mentioned until around the halfway point, though I can't swear to that.

But, you know, other readers are loving this series. Check out the fan art.

Plot Project: Protagonist Alek wants to be archduke and end a war. Protagonist Deryn wants to serve on an airship, even though she's a girl, and now she wants Alek, too. Behemoth seems to be all about keeping them from getting what they want. So this series does seem to follow the give-characters- something-to-want-and-then-keep-them-from-getting-it plot generation plan.

"This Guy Is A Master."

That's a quote from a family member. He was talking about another writer. Not me.

I have created a rabid Scott Westerfeld fan here in my own home. I picked up the audio version of Uglies for a car trip a week and a half ago. I'd already read the book, so I wasn't paying that much attention. But the guy with me went nuts. We couldn't finish the book that day, so he continued listening while going back and forth to work, and now he's maybe halfway through Pretties. He knows Reading Fool's library has Specials on CD. He has his commuting time planned for the immediate future.

I keep hearing about "Tallie this" and "Tallie that" and what "Dr. Creepy Person" said. "This guy is a master," my family member said of Westerfeld this afternoon. "He's done it all. He's created such a world."

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

I'm living with someone who's obsessed.

Sharp Cover

Scott Westerfeld has finished the first draft of Extras, the next book in the Uglies series. Get a load of the cover. And, while you're at it, look at the number of responses he got to that blog post.

I have that many readers, by the way. More than that many. You guys just aren't very vocal. I'm cool with the introvert thing.
