"Fights are awful, and messy, and desperate, and things move so fast and one mistake could end it"

The above is a quote from Derek Landy, black belt in Kenpo Karate and author of the Skullduggery Pleasant novels. He is interviewed at Finding Wonderland as part of the Winter Blog Blast Tour.

You know what else fights are? Exhausting, meaning that it is highly unlikely they would ever last as long as they do in the movies.

Sooo, how's that martial art coming, Gail?

;) Somehow that "exhausting" sounded a bit like experience!

Sparring is my least favorite thing to do in tkd class. The thing that really shocked me about it is how exhausting it is. A minute round is forever, especially if you've already done three or four of them. And I'm careful to pace myself. Some of the guys look as if they're on the brink of cardiac arrest after three or four rounds. It's not unusual to see sweat on the mat, people all soaked. Your hair's a mess because you've been wearing a helmet, and you've been sweating under it.

I no longer like those fake, arty martial arts movies because the prolonged fight scenes are so laughable to me now.
